Child Study Team
Description of Program | Pre-School | Child Find Awareness Program | Staff

The Child Study Team is comprised of a supervisor, psychologist,  a learning consultant,  and  school social worker.  These specialists work with principals, teachers, school nurse,  parents and children, to identify children who have special needs that require attention in school, apart from the program available in the regular classroom.

These special needs might include poor speech or language development, inadequate development of reading and math skills, an unusual fast or slow rate of learning, emotional or social problems, physical difficulties or chronic illness.

A referral to the Child Study Team may be made by a parent or a teacher.  The team conducts a meeting with the parents and teacher to determine if a comprehensive evaluation is warranted.  Parental consent is obtained to conduct the assessments identified in the evaluation plan.

A meeting will be conducted to review the results of the assessments and to determine whether the student is eligible for special education and related services.  If it is determined that a student has one or more of the disabilities identified in Chapter 14 of the New Jersey Administrative Code, the student may be eligible for special education and related services.  An Individualized Education Program will be developed identifying specialized instruction and possible placement changes.  The district provides a range of program options that may include services in the general education classroom to placement in a special education school.

Pre-School Children

Identification of children aged 3-5 with special needs is a high priority of the Child Study Team.  A pre-school program is available for 3-5 year olds with special needs in areas of language, learning, physical, social or emotional development.
